Betty Coneala Tant

Betty Coneala Tant, 98, of Columbus, GA passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 at her residence at Gardens of Calvary. Funeral services will be held at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 4048 Macon Road, Columbus, GA on Saturday, July 22, 2023 beginning at 3:00 PM. The interment will conclude at Evergreen Memorial Park, 4500 St Marys Rd, Columbus, GA. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.

Betty was born on June 2, 1925 in Blakely, GA to Oscar Culpepper and Ethel Charlotte Parker Culpepper. She was employed by Jordan Mills for many years where she worked as a twister tender. Betty enjoyed playing bingo, reading, cooking, and gardening. She looked forward to her visits to Calloway Gardens and going to the beach with her sisters. She was also quite an athlete, especially in basketball, softball, and bowling. Betty’s achievements in these sports included playing an exhibition basketball game with The Harlem Globetrotters, playing in a local softball league well into her mid 60’s, and being hailed as “The Gardens of Calvary Bowling Champion”.

Betty attended Calvary Freewill Baptist Church. Her family remembers her as a lady who was a servant to all. Many lives have been touched by her generous spirit and giving heart. Her presence will be greatly missed but the way she lived her life will always remain an inspiration for others to follow.

Betty is preceded in death by her parents Oscar and Ethel Culpepper, her loving and devoted husband J. L. Tant, son Jack Lee Tant, and granddaughter Elaine Crimson Grubb.

Survivors include her daughters Susan Tant Grubb and Madge Reed Daniel (Billy), both of Columbus; sister Dorothy Parker and brother Frank Culpepper (Kathleen), both of Valdosta, GA; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
