Billy Gene Mathis

Billy Mathis, 92, of Columbus, Georgia passed away on Friday February 23, 2024 in the comfort of his home.

Interment will be held at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Rd. Columbus, Georgia, at 11:00 am on Wednesday, February 28, 2024. The family will receive friends one hour prior at Vance Brooks Funeral Home-Columbus located at 4048 Macon Rd. Columbus, Georgia.

Billy Gene Mathis was born on April 20, 1931 in Henry County, Alabama to the late William Mathis and Lossie Whitehead Mathis Coates. He worked as a maintenance supervisor and inspector at Columbus Carpet Mill for 45 years until his retirement. He was a dedicated member of Saint Peter United Methodist Church. In his free time, Billy was a NASCAR fan and enjoyed taking walks every day. He loved to visit Heath Park, where the geese and ducks were so fond of him that they would come straight over when they spotted him. He will be remembered as a family man who was always there for his loved ones.

Other than his parents, Billy was preceded in death by the love of his life and wife of 61 years, Lucia Kite Mathis, son Donald "Donnie" Mathis, and several beloved in-laws.

He is survived by his daughter Susan Barnes and her husband Donald Barnes of Columbus, Georgia; son James Mathis and his wife Malinda Mathis of Alabama; grandchildren Traci Jones, Kayla Durga, Todd Mathis, Billy Wayne Mathis, Scott Mathis, Lisa Dupree, and Stephen Mathis; several great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; brother-in-law Wallace Kite and his wife Dot Kite of Panama City, Florida; as well countless other loved ones and friends.
