Brother Raymond Daniels Smith

Brother Raymond Daniels Smith, 81, of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away peacefully at his residence on Wednesday, December 14, 2022, while surrounded by his loving family.

A Funeral Service will be held at 10:00 AM EST on Friday, December 16, 2022, at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints located at 3927 U.S. Highway 80 West, Phenix City, Alabama 36870, with Bishop Murray Zogg officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Newsome Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 9:30 at the church.

Brother Smith was born in Ogden, Utah the son of the late Elizabeth Hellewell Smith and Raymond Jones Smith. Brother Smith was an American Patriot who truly loved his country. He proudly served his country in the United States Army, as a helicopter pilot in the Vietnam War. After returning from duty, he continued to serve his country in the National Guard. In addition to his military service, he served thirty-two years in public safety as Deputy Sheriff for the Russell County Sheriff’s Department, a Police Officer in National City, CA and Phenix City, AL and as a Pardons and Parole Officer for the State of Alabama Pardons and Parole. After retirement, he enjoyed genealogy research and knowing his family’s history. Brother Smith was also devoted to his church serving in many capacities including Bishop, and NASE Family History Consultant and Welfare Coordinator. Above all, he cherished the time and memories with his family.

In addition to his parents, Brother Smith was preceded in death by a brothers Terry Hellewell, Glenn Smith and sisters Ellen Sampson and Janine Richie.

Those left behind to cherish his memory is his devoted wife of fifty-eight  years Patricia McClure Smith; daughters Lynn Jones (David) of Seale, AL, Susan Young (Marcus) of Navarre, FL, Carole Martinez (Gino) of Seale, AL, Janine McPhie (Andy) of Ellerslie, GA and Sara Jane Blackman (Douglas) of Cumming, GA; sons Raymond J. Smith (Julie) of Phenix City, AL and Daniels Smith (Cheryl) of Raymore, MO; sister Sally Payne (Hal) of Mt. Vernon, TX; brothers Kenneth Smith (Linda) Pleasant Grove, UT, Bruce Smith(Marsha) of St. George, Utah, Scott Smith (Judy) Beaverton, OR and Kevin Smith (Barbara) of Spokane Valley, WA; twenty seven grandchildren; twelve great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and extended family members.

The family is requesting in lieu of flowers to make contributions to the Newsome Cemetery Fund c/o Pat Smith 444 Lee Road 504 Phenix City, AL 36870.
