Born on July 9, 1959, in Gadsden, Alabama, Mr. Nichols was the son of the late Austin E. Nichols and Mary Lee McKinney Nichols. A dedicated patriot, he served honorably in the U.S. Army. Following his military service, he found his calling at Russell County High School, where he taught History and Economics to high school seniors, a role he cherished deeply. David also had a profound passion for coaching, particularly wrestling, a sport he loved dearly. His contributions to the wrestling program were so impactful that the David Arnold Nichols Tournament was established in his honor. A devoted sports fan, he proudly cheered for the Alabama Crimson Tide, “Roll Tide!”
In addition to his teaching and coaching, David enjoyed cultivating a thriving vegetable garden, believing in the health benefits it provided while also relishing the activity itself. His commitment to healthy living extended to his writing a cookbook titled "Papa's Pantry," which reflected his dedication to a wholesome lifestyle.
David’s influence on the lives of his students went beyond athletics; he instilled values of character and integrity in them as well. He will be fondly remembered as a man with deep Christian convictions who embodied the principles of God, Country, and Family. Being a father, teacher, and mentor brought him joy, but his greatest pride was being a Papa. He cherished every moment spent with his family, leaving behind a legacy of love, unforgettable memories, and guidance.
Mr. Nichols was preceded in death by his parents, Austin and Mary Nichols and several siblings.
