Gerry Cox, age 65, peacefully joined the Lord on May 13, 2025, surrounded by family. Born on May 19, 1959, Gerry was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Gerry lives on through his daughter, Joy Hammock (Dustin), and his cherished grandchildren: Ansley Ingram, Kagan Cox, Kaylee Shelton, Kamdin Shelton, Drake Hammock, and Miller Hammock. He is also lovingly remembered by his dear aunts, Lafaye Cox Dellinger and Bobbie Murphy, his brothers: Jim Cox (Cathy), Gene Cox (Elizabeth Ann), and Jon Cox (Julie); along with many nieces, nephews, cousins, and special friends he held close to his heart.
Gerry was welcomed into eternal rest by his parents, Jim “Tony” Cox Sr. and Christine Cox Williams, and his daughter, Cissie Cox.
Gerry and his brothers grew up on a family farm, where they learned the value of hard work and how to produce much of what they needed. Under the guidance of their father, they each learned the craft of masonry at an early age—skills that would shape their careers and reputation for excellence. Gerry perfected the art of brick masonry and was widely admired for his exceptional craftsmanship and attention to detail.
Their mother, Christine, nurtured in her boys a respect for faith and a love for the Lord that stayed with Gerry throughout his life.
As boys, the brothers also developed a shared love for racing, a passion that stayed with Gerry and evolved into his lifelong hobby of building and enjoying hot rods and classic cars. He later made his home on a piece of the original family farm, living among his brothers, cousins, nieces, and nephews—close to the land and the people he held dear.
In retirement, Gerry found new purpose driving a school bus for Russell County Schools, where he cared deeply for the children and families he served.
Gerry was an outdoorsman through and through. Whether he was hunting a variety of wild game, fishing, gardening, spending time on the river, or grilling for those he loved, you’d find him outside with music playing—The Eagles were a favorite. Always working on a project, he believed in leaving nothing unfinished, yet he never hesitated to stop and lend a helping hand to others. His greatest joy came from time spent with family, which he valued above all else. His years as “Pawpaw” brought him immeasurable joy, and he treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren, teaching them, proudly cheering them on, and sharing in their lives.
Gerry was an extraordinary father to his daughters and a steady, supportive father figure to many others whose lives he touched with kindness, wisdom, and quiet strength.
Gerry will be laid to rest on his birthday, May 19, 2025, beside his beloved parents.
A celebration of his life will be held at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, Alabama.
