Gladys Breeland, 96, of Phenix City, AL, went to be with the Lord on September 16, 2025. A visitation will be held at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 3738 Hwy 431 N., Phenix City, AL 36867, on Friday, September 26, 2025, at 2:00 pm EST – 2:50 pm EST, followed by a graveside service at Lakeview Memory Gardens at 3:00 pm EST, officiated by Rev. Chris Herbert.
Gladys Breeland was born in Jay, FL, on June 4, 1929, to the late John William Meeks and Bertha Dorman Meeks. Gladys was proficient in her work and proud of her accomplishments. She enjoyed her career in banking for many years until becoming a dental receptionist for Dr. Newlin, helping in numerous aspects of the business. Gladys was known as a woman of very strong faith. She loved to gather with her brothers and sisters in Christ at her church, Epworth United Methodist Church, for worship. Her love for the Lord extended to every part of her life, including a phone ministry she shared for many years with a group of friends. In her free time, Gladys also loved dancing and listening to music, laughing, and helping others. There are times that Gladys would open her home to others to house and feed people who needed help. She loved having people join around her table for a meal. Gladys was a sweet and loving woman who made others feel loved and welcome. She will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved her.
Gladys Breeland is preceded in death by her parents; husbands, James Calhoun, Larry Helms, and Lee O’Neal Breeland; and siblings, Dollie Mooney, Maxie Bennefield, Tolbert Meeks, Olee “Pete” Meeks, and Casey Meeks. She is survived by her son, James Patrick Calhoun and wife Barbara; grandson, Ethan Hunter Calhoun and wife Hayden; nephew, Mike Bennefield and wife Pat as well as their daughter Brittany Zapp and husband Jonathan; and dear friend, Inge Seibert.
