Mr. Harold Elliot Smith, 88, of Goodwater, AL, passed away on Saturday, November 29, 2025 at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, AL.
A graveside service will be held 12:00 noon CST Tuesday, December 2, 2025 at Liberty Global Methodist Church Cemetery in Goodwater, AL with Rev. Ray Martin officiating. The family will receive friends after the service in the fellowship hall at the church.
Elliot was born on April 11, 1937, in Clay County, AL, to Joe Thurman Smith and Irene Moore Smith. He proudly served his country in the Alabama Army National Guard and also in the United States Army. Elliot was the proud owner of Smith Furniture, a business he built and faithfully ran for more than 60 years. He was known for his steady work ethic - he never took a Saturday off - and for his generosity and integrity in serving the community. Elliot was quick to help anyone in need, and he lived out his Christian faith, treating all with kindness and humility.
Elliot had a lifelong love for the outdoors, caring for dozens of animals over the years and spending time on Lake Martin. In his younger days, he was a fearless adventurer - waterskiing, roller skating, and famously riding two horses at the same time. He will be remembered for his devotion to family, his steady and generous spirit, and the lasting impact he made on everyone who knew him.
A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Elliot is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nelwyn Smith; his children Jennie (David), Martha (Barry), and Harold (Teresa); his grandchildren Anna (Brendan), Samuel, Jonathan, Cooper, Emily (Chad), and Bradley; his sisters-in-law Shelba and Barbara; and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his brothers Joe (Joyce), Jim, and Terry Smith.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Liberty Global Methodist Church, 1630 Liberty Road, Goodwater, AL 35072.
