Jimmy Orion Rollo, 82, of Phenix City, AL passed away late Friday night, January 26, 2024, at the Bethany House in Auburn, AL.
Mr. Rollo was born September 30, 1941, in Auburn, AL, son of the late James O. Rollo and Margaret Alice Smyer Rollo. He was the owner / operator of Valley Landscape and Turf in Phenix City for 50 years, completing projects across the southeast as well as other parts of the United States, and had since retired. He was a 1959 graduate of Smiths Station High School, lettering in football, baseball, and basketball, and was named MVP on the 1958 Smiths Station High School Football Team. After high school, he attended and played football for Southwest Mississippi Community College, later transferring to Auburn University, which led him to opportunities to play semi-professional football in Montgomery, AL. Mr. Rollo was a huge supporter of the Auburn Tigers, always cheering them on every season. He was a local member of the Phenix City Home Builders Association and a former member of the Phenix City Junior Chamber of Commerce. During the 1980s, he even logged the hours to obtain a private pilot’s license through Cessna Integrated Flight Training System, flying a plane nicknamed “Tweety Bird” for its yellow color. He enjoyed many different hobbies: building and racing dune buggies; hunting and fishing; nature, and the outdoors; raising bird dogs; horseback riding; traveling to the mountains, with his favorite city being Steamboat Springs, CO. Jimmy was a man who enjoyed time with his family and friends, and the simpler things God created. Jimmy was a Baptist by faith and enjoyed teaching Sunday school as a young man.
Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sue Rollo; son, Jeffery Carlton Rollo; sister, Margie Roberts; and brother, Ike Rollo.
He is survived by one daughter, Kim Rollo of Phenix City, AL; son, Patrick Rollo of Phenix City, AL; brother, Bob Rollo (Beth) of Salem, AL; five grandchildren, Jaci Rollo Krieger (Aaron), Samantha Wheeler (Jamie), Dylan Johnson, Jeffery Rollo (Ann Marie), John-Pat Rollo, and a step granddaughter, Hannah Hay. Jimmy had three beloved great-granddaughters, Annelise Krieger, Cora Beth Wheeler and Raylee Rollo and two nephews, Cliff Roberts, and Robby Rollo. He had several close friends, Frank Malloy, Robert Brown, John Howard and Davey Haden. Jimmy had many other extended family members and numerous caring friends.
Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM EST on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City. Interment will follow at 4:00 PM EST at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church Cemetery in Salem, AL. The family will receive friends Tuesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 PM EST at Vance Brooks in Phenix City.
