Phenix City, AL

Mr. Johnny Ray Thomas, 82, of Phenix City, Alabama passed away on May 2, 2024 at the Columbus Hospice House in Columbus, GA.  He was a beloved Husband, Father, Grandfather, Brother, Uncle, and friend, who will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service will be held 11:00 am EDT Monday, May 6, 2024 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL with Dr. David Kees officiating.  Interment will follow at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Louisville, AL.  The family will receive friends Monday morning from 10:00 am until 11:00 am, one hour prior to the service, at the funeral home.

 

Johnny Ray was born on July 9th, 1941 in Barbour County, Alabama and graduated from Louisville High School.  He later moved to Phenix City, Alabama where he began his career at Tom’s Foods.  Upon retirement, he began a second career with Phenix-Girard Bank.  Throughout his career he was known for his hard work, dedication, and his kindness to others.

Johnny Ray excelled in life in his role as “Papa” to his five grandchildren, and was an avid Auburn football fan.

Johnny Ray is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Voncile Johnson Thomas, his two children; John Thomas and wife Tiffany; Julie Adams and husband Mitch; and his grandchildren Cora, Marcin, Holton, Alan, and Jett along with his brother Ladon Thomas, sister Sara Thomas Vega, nieces Sherry Harden, Lucy Greene, Sharon Minor, Madonna Thomas, and Denise Grogan; Nephews Donald and David Thomas and many cousins. Johnny Ray was preceded in death by his sister Mary Daniels, his father Arthur Lee Thomas and mother Ethel Lee Thomas. His memory will be cherished by all who knew him.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Columbus Hospice of Georgia and Alabama.
