Joseph E. Spitznagel, 86, of Phenix City, AL passed away late Saturday night, August 23, 2025, in the comfort of his home while surrounded by his loving family.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am EDT on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City. Interment with full military honors will follow at Lakeview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 pm EDT at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City.

Mr. Spitznagel was born September 4, 1938, in Jeffersonville, IN, son of the late Frank Spitznagel, Sr. and Hildagard Spitznagel. He served our country proudly and with honor and was a Veteran of the United States Army retiring after 20 years of service. After his service career, he was employed with Bickerstaff / Boral Bricks as a maintenance technician retiring after 20 plus years of faithful and dedicated service. Joseph was a member of St. Patrick’s Church in Phenix City. He enjoyed fishing, NASCAR, tinkering with older model cars, and traveling. He loved spending time with his family with the greatest joy of all being his children and grandchildren. Joseph will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Christina Ann Spitznagel; two sisters, Mary Lou Noon, and Dot Frantz; and four brothers, Frank Spitznagel, Jr., Jack Spitznagel, Marvin Spitznagel, and Harvey Spitznagel.

He is survived by his beautiful bride of 63 years, Doris Burnham Spitznagel of Phenix City, AL; four children, Joseph Spitznagel of Columbus, GA, Regina Nix (Jason) of Harris County, GA, Thomas Spitznagel (Marquett) of Phenix City, AL, and Sherri Spitznagel (Robert Enke) of Columbus, GA; six grandchildren, Chelsea Bussey (Adam), Ryan Nix, Emma Spitznagel, Madison Nix, Reese Spitznagel, and Ava Bishop; one precious great granddaughter, Kyndall Nix; numerous nieces, nephews, other loving family members, and many caring friends.
