Lloyd Cecil Frey, 77, of Phenix City, AL, died peacefully at home with his loving wife, children, and brother by his side on Thursday, August 28, 2025. Those who met him witnessed a life of love, gentleness, faithfulness, kindness, patience, joy, self-control, peace, and goodness, which were a quiet overflow of his relationship with Jesus.
Mr. Frey was preceded in death by his parents, Raymon and Sarah Frey, and a brother, Wayne Frey. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia Wohlford Frey of Phenix City, AL; son Joel Frey (Julie) and their children Evan and Aubrey of Statham, GA; daughter Lisa Frey Barrick (Patrick) and their children Emily, Catherine, and Addison of Hoover, AL; his remaining brother, Paul Frey (Carol) of Norcross, GA; and numerous loving family members and friends.
Mr. Frey was born December 26, 1947, in Birmingham, AL, and grew up in Tarrant, AL. It was at The University of Montevallo that he met his future wife, Cynthia Wohlford, shortly after arriving on campus. They dated throughout college and were married two weeks after graduation. This love story lasted for over 55 years during which they delighted in their children and spouses, and their grandchildren. Family time, such as at the beach or in the mountains, was cherished.
He was a U.S. Air Force veteran having served from Anchorage, AK, during the Vietnam War era. Beginning at that time, he attended the University of Alaska and later earned his graduate degree in counseling from Auburn University. During his professional career, he was a teacher and later the principal of Russell County High School for many years, and retired as the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) for the Russell County Board of Education.
Mr. Frey was an athlete. For 50 years, during the school breaks in the summer, he backpacked certain sections of the Appalachian Trail. He regularly biked 20 miles on the Columbus Riverwalk and completed many long-distance rides. Often in a single day, he would ride 80 to 100 miles. Never an idle man, he became a certified Tai Chi instructor and also found time to swim two miles at the YMCA regularly. He showed support for his teams by wearing Auburn or Atlanta Braves gear, which often got friendly comments from strangers.
Music was an integral part of Lloyd’s life. From high school onward he was always part of a choral group. For 50 years, he and Cynthia were faithful choir members at Edgewood Presbyterian Church, Columbus, GA, where he also served as an Elder.
Visitation will be on Saturday, September 6, 2025, noon Eastern time at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL. They want to emphasize to their Alabama friends and family that all times are “Georgia time.”
Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Eastern time following visitation. Trained Ruling Elder Susan Gilbert and Member Care Elder Liz Allison will officiate. Sign language interpreting services will be provided for those who are Deaf or Hard of Hearing. Interment with U.S. Air Force honors will follow in the Lakeview Memory Gardens Prayer Garden nearby.
In place of flowers, you may donate in Lloyd’s name to a charity, a church, or the Parkinson’s Foundation.
Heartfelt thanks go to Gentiva Hospice and the caring CNAs of CAREvity, LLC, who made it possible for Lloyd to be cared for at home the last two weeks of his life.
