Mrs. Marjorie A. Byars Dempsey-Burke

Mrs. Marjorie A. Byars Dempsey-Burke, 85, of Phenix City, AL passed away Sunday, October 15, 2023 at Columbus Hospice in Columbus, GA.

A graveside service will be held 2:00 pm EDT Thursday, October 19, 2023 at Lakeview Memory Gardens in Phenix City, AL, with Rev. Charles Hayes officiating.  The family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 pm on Wednesday evening, October 18, 2023 at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL.

Mrs. Dempsey-Burke was born in Pike County, AL on February 13, 1938, daughter of the late C. A. Austin and Desire Stinson Austin.  She drove a school bus for the Phenix City School System for many years.  Mrs. Dempsey-Burke was a former member of First Assembly of God in Phenix City, where she taught Sunday School and was involved in the women’s ministry.  She also enjoyed taking care of her flowers, gardening and painting.

Other than her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband Marshall “Sonny” Burke, as well as seven siblings.

Mrs. Dempsey is survived by two daughters, Lori Simpson and husband Patrick of Cataula, GA and Deedra Gilbert and husband Harrell of AL; two sons, David Mathis and wife Charmer of Phenix City, AL and Garry Scroggs of Box Springs, GA; two sisters, Lucy Burkett of Phenix City, AL and Tammy Griggs and husband Gary of Alex City, AL; two brothers, Charles Austin and wife Marilyn and Randy Austin, all of Phenix City, AL; ten grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; numerous extended family and friends.
