Mary J. Smith, 93, of Auburn, AL, passed away peacefully on August 23, 2025. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, August 27, 2025, at 2:00 pm, at Parkhill Cemetery, 4161 Macon Road, Columbus, GA 31907, officiated by Rev. Mike Reeves.
Mary Smith was born at Ft. Benning, GA, on April 10, 1932, to the late Thomas Catlin Joiner and Helen Marie Joiner. After high school she became a successful career woman. She worked at Ft. Benning, GA and the Waterways Experiment Station in Vicksburg, MS as a civil service employee. Mary was a devoted Christian woman whose faith was one of her many passions. She served various church roles including being a children’s church director and a senior citizen group leader. Mary was quick witted, fast to laugh, and she loved to tease that David, her baby boy, was her favorite child. Mary loved her grandchildren. She especially adored “our little girl”, Skyler, her great-great-granddaughter. Mary will be missed dearly by those who knew and loved her.
Mary J. Smith is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Hardy J. Smith; parents, Thomas Catlin Joiner and Helen Marie Joiner; siblings; and sons-in-law, Lonnie Garrison, Kirby Johnson, and Dennis LeBrasseur.
Mary is survived by her daughters, Marie Johnson, Julie Garrison, Stacey LeBrasseur, and Jeannie McCormick (Jason); sons, Raymond Lee Clark, Jr., and William David Clark, III (Sandra); step-son, Edwin Smith (Dhanna); sisters, Helen Marie Minor (John), and Barbara Ann Culpepper (Bobby); brothers, Howard Joiner and Richard Joiner; grandchildren, Michele Perry (David), Rebecca Ann Rutzen, Heidi Netteler (Mark), David Geno Haas, Jr., (Millie), Carolyn Clark, Sam Clark, Alex Clark, Michael Clark, and Connar and Ian Smith; numerous great-grandchildren, and one special great-great-granddaughter, Skyler Kirkman.
