Melvin Charles Burton, Sr., of Phenix City, Alabama, passed away peacefully on January 17, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Born on February 21, 1950, he lived a life defined by service, strength, and an unwavering devotion to those he loved.A visitation will be held at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 3738 Hwy 431 N., Phenix City, Al 36867, on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, at 10:00 am EST - 11:00 am EST with a funeral service following at 11:00 am EST with Rev. Donald Leavins officiating. A burial will take place at a later date at Arlington National Cemetery.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ethel and Melvin; his siblings, David and Linda; and his eldest son, Allen.
He is survived by his children: Charles, Lynda (Ouray), Jennifer (Michael), Shaun, and William; 16 grandchildren: Olivia, Ethan, Barrett, Jason, Liam, Melvin III, Abigail, James, Nicholas, Isaac, Dylan, Jalyn, Sidney, Madalyn, Colin, Makalyn; and seven great-grandchildren. He also leaves behind his beloved siblings, Mary, Bobby, and Susie. Though separated by miles, they remained inseparable in spirit.
A proud veteran of the United States Army, Melvin served his country with profound courage and honor. He was the recipient of both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star, decorations that stand as a testament to his bravery, sacrifice, and commitment to freedom.
Beyond his military honors, Melvin was a devoted father and a cherished grandfather (Papa) and great-grandfather. His family was the foundation of his life, and he led them by example—demonstrating resilience and selflessness in both uniform and civilian life.
His legacy lives on through the generations he shaped and the values he instilled. We remain forever grateful for his service, his sacrifice, and his enduring love.
