Melvin Chisolm, a cherished husband, father, and Opa, passed away on September 14, 2025, at the age of 80. Born on August 18, 1945, in Charleston, South Carolina, Melvin’s journey through life was marked by dedication, resilience, and an unwavering love for his family and country. A visitation to celebrate Melvin's life will take place on September 21, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Columbus, Georgia. This will be followed by a funeral service on September 22, 2025, starting at 1:00 PM, at the same location. These services provide a chance for family and friends to gather and honor a life well-lived.
For 22 years, Melvin honorably served as an infantryman in the United States Army, exemplifying the values of duty and sacrifice that define our nation's heroes. After his military service, he devoted himself to lifting up his military community with his work as a civil servant at the Fort Benning Commissary, where his kindness and commitment left a profound impact on those around him.
Melvin was a beloved figure whose laid-back personality and kind heart made him a source of comfort and strength for his family. Described as “the best Dad in the world”, he stood by his family to the very end.
Melvin was a longtime fan of the Atlanta Braves and found great pleasure in listening to old music and sharing that music with his children. His passions were woven into the fabric of his character, enriching the lives of those around him.
Melvin is survived by his children Darlene Avery (George), Susan Doleman, James Walker (Janet), Jeffrey Walker (Trish), and Bettina Williams; grandchildren, including Rufus Thomas Jr., Nicoal Thomas, and many others, along with nine great-grandchildren; his sister Carol Lucas (James); as well his nieces and nephew. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of over 40 years, Christine Chisolm, and his son, Melvin D. Walker. He is also reunited in spirit with his parents, Daniel Chisolm and Annie Taylor Chisolm; his brother, Daniel Taylor; and his sister, Lucille Frasier. Their love remains a guiding light for Melvin's family, who will forever cherish the memories created together.
Melvin Chisolm leaves behind a legacy of love, service, and kindness that will continue to resonate in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him.
