Mildred Annette King, a pillar of strength and a beacon of love, passed away on March 2, 2026, at the age of 90. Born on November 29, 1935, in Columbus, Georgia, Mildred graced the world with her vibrant spirit and unwavering determination. A funeral service to honor Mildred’s life will be held on Thursday March 5, 2026 at 11:00 AM at Vance Brooks Funeral Home 4048 Macon Rd., Columbus, Georgia 31907. The family will receive friends from 10:00-11:00 AM the same day. Interment at Evergreen Memorial Park will take place immediately following the service.
Mildred was known for her intelligence, resilience, and strong will. In 1954 she graduated from Jordan Vocational High School and then attended Columbus State where she earned a bachelor's degree in business. Her strong work ethic led her to become a dedicated manager at Swift Textiles and later work in real estate. Mildred embodied professionalism and passion, leaving a lasting mark on her community.
Family was always at the heart of everything Mildred did, and gatherings were especially important to her, as she thrived in the kitchen, creating delicious meals that brought everyone together. She was a dedicated member of Upatoi United Methodist Church. In her spare time, Mildred found joy in gardening and crafting, often expressing her creativity through crochet.
Throughout her life, Mildred served her community with grace, notably as a member of the Columbus City Council, where her contributions helped shape the lives of many. Her dedication did not go unnoticed; she was honored with several awards from the Mayor of Columbus, reflecting her commitment to public service and the well-being of others.
Mildred is survived by her beloved son, David King, and his wife Stacia, along with cherished grandchildren Christopher Scott King and Tabbetha Yvonne King, who continue to carry her legacy forward. She took immense pride in her great-grandson, Josh Sawyer, who brought her boundless joy and was a constant reminder of the love she nurtured within her family. Mildred also leaves behind her dear brother, Charles Wesley Mears Sr., along with several nieces and nephews who will miss her deeply.
In addition to her parents, James N. Mears and Jessie Richards Mears, Mildred was preceded in death by her beloved husband, John Franklin King; her son, Donnie Franklin King; great-grandson, Jake Sawyer; sisters, Gayle Savage and Joyce Beach.
As we remember Mildred, we celebrate a life filled with love, family, and service to others. Her indomitable spirit will forever remain in the hearts of those she touched, and her legacy will continue through her family, who carry forward the lessons of strength, resilience, and unwavering devotion she instilled in them. Mildred King was deeply loved and will be sorely missed by all who knew her.
