Mr. Sanford A. “Sam” Monk Iii

Sanford A. Monk, III, (Sam) 74, of Hurtsboro, Alabama, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, November 10, 2021, at the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, while surrounded by his family.

A Graveside Service will be held at 12:00 pm EST (11:00 am CST) on Saturday, November 13, 2021, at Hurtsboro Cemetery, Hurtsboro, AL, with Rev. Chris Webb, officiating. The family will receive friends Friday evening from 6-8:00 pm EST (5-7:00 pm CST) at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, 3738 Highway 431 North, Phenix City, AL 36867.

Mr. Monk was born in Montgomery, AL, the son of the late Sanford A. Monk, Jr. and Gladys Tew LaJambe. He was a computer programmer for GEAC until his retirement. Mr. Monk was the Chief of the Hurtsboro Volunteer Fire Department for 5 years and was very passionate about the department. He lived a very active lifestyle always involved in various activities. He enjoyed shooting, hunting, blacksmithing and loved to sing. He was a very active member of Hurtsboro First Baptist Church where he served as Chairman of the Deacon Board. He also was a skilled craftsman often learning new trades by studying videos and articles on the internet. Above all, he loved his family and spending quality time with each of them.

Mr. Monk is survived by his loving wife of 55 years June Wynn Monk; two daughters Tina Haley (Mark) of Knoxville, TN and Wendy Black of Dublin, GA; two brothers Pat Monk (Judy) of Smyrna, GA and Paul Monk (Rayline) of Moody, AL; four grandchildren Meghan Shepherd (Jake), Casey Thornton, Sarah Wilkins and Jeremy Wilkins; two great grandchildren Felicity Rose Wilkins and Lucas Zane Shepherd.
