SSG (Ret.) Stuart “Stu” Lindsay Hansen, U.S. Army, 75, of Smiths Station. AL died on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at his home while under the care of his wife, Evelyn Hansen by his side, and Gentiva Hospice Care.
SSG (Ret.) Hansen was born May 23, 1950, in Oakland, CA, son of the late James William Hansen and Eder Lindsey Hansen.
SSG (Ret.) Hansen retired from the U.S. Army after 28 years of committed service to our country. During his distinguished military career he saw service in Vietnam, 1968 – 1970, with the United States Army’s 5th Special Forces Group, Green Beret Unit (Airborne) that saw extensive action in Vietnam. He served in Granada, 1983, Panama, 1989, and Desert Storm, 1990 and received four Purple Hearts during his reign. SSG (Ret.) Hansen received the Bronze Star with Valor Device, the Air Assault Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm Unit Citation, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and many other bars, badges, and awards. He attended Lassen College from 1971 – 1973, Sierra College from 1974 – 1976 receiving an associate’s degree for Fire Management, and an associate’s degree for Professional Aeronautics.
After retirement, Stu continued his education at Columbus State from 1994 – 1997 receiving his Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice. He continued employment with the Georgia Department of Corrections as a Correctional Officer 2nd Class, from 1995 – 2007, and volunteered for Veterans Affairs for 14 years in Columbus, GA. He also volunteered with Gentiva Hospice providing certificates of appreciation for Veterans and their service.
Stu was an active member of Beaver Creek Baptist Church with Pastor Lynn McManious, where he served as an Usher and sang in the church choir. Stu loved his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and was a man of deep faith who truly had a heart of gold, he would lend a helping hand to anyone that was in need and was a true patriot to our country. When 9-11 struck devastation in New York, Stu volunteered in helping the cleanup crew at the World Trade Center, witnessing the horror of the terroristic attacks. Stu also volunteered and went to Western North Carolina in 2024 when the flood destroyed specific areas and helped those in need.
In his spare time, he was a talented painter creating unique pieces of art that he shared with family and friends. He enjoyed going to museums, historical sites, going on numerous cruise voyages with his wife and spending quality time with his family, friends, and his beloved cat, Molly.
Mr. Hansen is preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Eder Hansen, and stepson, Corey White.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Brewer Hansen, sister, Mary Louise Hansen, stepson, Benjamin White (Beth), step-daughter-in-law, Jennifer White; four grandchildren; Alexis, Ashley (James), Nathan, and Cody; four great-grandchildren; Colton, Allyson, Adelyn, and newly arrived, Jaxson.
Graveside Services with the United States Army Honors will be held on Monday, December 1, 2025, at 11:00 AM (EST) at Ft. Mitchell National Cemetery.
