Doris Suzanne Smith Huckaby, 79, of Phenix City, AL died at St. Francis Hospital, Columbus, GA, when Jesus came to take her home on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.
A Memorial Visitation will be held from 4:30 PM until 6:30 PM (EST) on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at Vance Brooks Funeral Home, Phenix City, AL and a private Service of Remembrance will be held at a later date.
Suzanne was born January 19, 1947, in Corpus Christi, TX, daughter of the late Robert Neal Smith and Doris Juanita Lewis Smith. She grew up in Reno, Nevada and graduated from high school there.
She worked as an Office Manager at Cobb Hospital and Vance Memorial Chapel. She found great fulfillment in both roles, as they allowed her to support families with kindness and care during some of their most challenging and meaningful moments.
Suzanne’s life was filled with warmth, kindness, and a boundless affection for her beloved Pomeranians. From her earliest years, these spirited little companions brought her joy, laughter, and comfort. Over the years, she cared for many, each one holding a special place in her heart. Her final and most cherished companion, “Wonder,” remains as a living reminder of the love they shared.
We will remember her as a loving and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Though our hearts are heavy due to our loss, we are filled with gratitude for the time we shared with her. Her legacy lives on in the love she gave, the lessons she taught and the memories she helped make. We will cherish them always.
Suzanne was preceded in death by her parents, Neal and Juanita Smith, her paternal grandmother, Lucille O’Grady, who raised her from the age of three when her mother died; and a sister, Dinan Perry.
Survivors include her husband of 45 years, John O. Huckaby, Phenix City, AL; one son, Paul Neal Hayes, Phenix City, AL; two daughters, Audra Suzanne Hannan and her husband John, Midland, GA, and Victoria Ann Creel and her husband Chuck, Ft. Mitchell, AL; one granddaughter, Cara Vercher; three grandsons, Nathan Tyler Hannan, Travis Neal Hannan and Colby Hunter Creel; great-grandchildren, Camden and Wesley Creel, Hallie Hannan and one on the way (Asher); several other family members and friends.
