Tommy F. Hurst, 89, of Opelika, AL formerly of Montgomery, AL died peacefully on Tuesday, January 27, 2026 while at the Bethany House in Auburn, AL under the care of Compassus Hospice.
A private Service of Remembrance will be held at a later date according to Vance Brooks Funeral Home, Phenix City, AL.
Mr. Hurst was born January 01, 1937, in Columbus, GA, son of the late Frank Milton Hurst, Sr. and Janie Jeannette Owens Hurst. He attended Central High School and was both a U. S. Army and U.S. Air Force Veteran. After he served our county, he became a commercial pilot working for various companies. Mr. Hurst eventually became a pilot for the state of Alabama. As one of the official pilots, he had the honor of flying several Alabama Governors during his distinguished career.
He married his wife of 64 years, Verlon Crenshaw Hurst, on July 12, 1956, and they never looked back.
Mr. Hurst was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Janie Jeanette Hurst, siblings, Frank Milton Hurst, Jr. and June Scala; his wife, Verlon Crenshaw Hurst and a nephew, David Barr.
Survivors include his son, Dr. Joby Hurst (Paula), Birmingham, AL; sister, Shirley Nickolson; two grandchildren, Benjamin Hurst (Haley) and Anna Hurst; nieces, Vicki Eversman (Scott), Susie Schwarting, and Tracy Hampton; nephews, Bruce Barr (Pam) and Joey Scala (Arlyn); other relatives and friends.
