Vernice Lowrey Britton, 91, of Smiths Station, AL passed away Sunday evening, December 28, 2025, at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, AL. Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm EST on Friday, January 2, 2026, at Smiths Station Baptist Church with Dr. David Kees officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday from 1:00 to 3:00 pm EST at Smiths Station Baptist Church prior to her funeral service. Committal services will be held at 2:00 pm CST / 3:00 pm EST at Chapel Hill Baptist Church Cemetery in Aquilla, AL (Millry Community) on Sunday, January 4, 2025, with Rev. Scott Giles officiating. Serving as pallbearers are David Zeigler, Henry Vaughn, Dickie Brown, Russell Slappey, Milford Burkhalter, and Mike McManus

Mrs. Britton was born March 22, 1934, on her grandfather’s farm near Healing Springs, AL. She was the only child of the late Louise Caton Lowrey and Vernon Vincent Lowrey. Vernice was raised in Millry and attended Millry High School. After graduation, she attended Livingston University and Auburn University. While at Millry High School, she held several different offices, was a cheerleader, and the DAR representative. At Livingston she was a member of Phi Mee Sorority and played on their softball team, which was always awarded The Good Sportsmanship trophy, but was never able to win any games. Vernice and her husband, T. C. Britton, moved to Smiths Station in 1956 because he wanted to coach sports. He was known as the father of Smiths Station High School football. Vernice taught for two years at Millry High School and was employed for 28 years by the Lee County Board of Education.

She and her husband joined Smiths Station Baptist Church in 1956 and were members until their passing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 52 years, T. C. Britton, and son, John Manley Britton.

She loved talking on the phone, cooking, gardening, and watching football games, most of all, she loved her family. She cherished spending time with her sons, Milton Britton, John Britton, and Clinton Britton; daughters-in-law, Tonya Britton and Carol Britton; three grandchildren, Luke Britton (Sarah), Hannah Carroll (Adam), and Taylor Thomason (Zach); seven precious great- grandchildren, Carolyne Carroll, Tennis Carroll, John Luke Britton, Benjamin Britton, Audrey Britton, Britton Thomason, and Brooks Thomason; numerous other loving family members, church family and many caring friends.
