William "Hammer" G. Helms

Mr. William “Hammer” Gregory Helms, 71, of Phenix City, AL, passed away Sunday, April 27, 2025 at his home surrounded by family and friends.

A visitation will be held at 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday, May 2, 2025, at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City, AL. A funeral service will be held at 1:00 pm EST, at Vance Brooks Funeral Home in Phenix City on Saturday, May 3, 2025, with Rev. Nelson Lugo officiating followed by a committal service at Lakeview Memory Gardens.

Hammer Helms was born on October 13, 1953, in Russell County, AL, son of the late Lois and William Helms. Mr. Helms worked at a Union Pipe Fitter for Local 52. He was a devout child of God and loved his family. He was a member of Phenix City First Assembly of God and served missions overseas with them. Hammer also enjoyed giving back to his community through volunteer community work. In his free time, he enjoyed gardening and going to his campground to play around on his excavator and tractor. He would always be seen wearing bib overalls and cracking a joke. He had a great sense of humor and quick wit. Hammer loved his family most of all. He will be deeply missed by those who knew and loved him.

Other than his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Wendy Helms; Step-mother, Ann Helms; brother, Jimmy Tatum; aunt, Vita Helms; and paternal and maternal grandparents, notably his Mama Cook who he had a special bond with.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 13 years, Cindy Helms; daughters, Lacey Alexandria Griffin (Allen), and Ashley Bozman; son, Christopher Blake Pease (Alexis); sister in law, Jan Tatum; aunts, Peggy Gresham and Evelyn Helms; cousins, Mike Ogletree (Debbie) and Monroe Allmond (Pamela); and grandchildren, Jaxon Tate Pease, Jasmine Pease, Aubree Pease, James Sexton, Hope Sexton, Hunter Sexton, and Elyzabeth Sexton.
